Peoples Bank Empowers the Next Generation of Leaders

Deidra Singleton, a Loan Operations leader at Peoples Bank, recently had the privilege of speaking at the Ladies in Action Mildred Mathes Leadership Academy. She aimed to introduce financial concepts to minority students, covering topics like credit, loans, and credit cards. The students were actively engaged and expressed a genuine interest in learning about preparing for college life and its associated expenses. Singleton was profoundly touched by this experience and felt inspired by Ladies in Action’s dedication to empowering minority communities.

The Ladies in Action program was established by Mildred Mathes in 1987, with the aim of supporting minority youth and young adults to make a personal impact and strengthen their educational pursuits. Today, under the leadership of Mildred’s daughter, Lori Mathes, the organization continues to evolve and has built a strong network of support that has served nearly 200 students.

Following Mildred’s passing in 2018, Lori Mathes has taken up the mantle and remains dedicated to gathering resources for academically qualified minority students. Like her mother, Lori envisions a future where students can reach their full potential through leadership training, mentoring, and addressing their overall well-being.

The Mildred Mathes Leadership Academy is one of the key programs offered by Ladies in Action. Other programs offered by the organization include scholarship banquets, golf tournaments, and Debutante and Beautillion Balls, which aim to help students grow both professionally and personally. Lori Mathes emphasizes the importance of pushing students beyond their comfort zones and preparing them for the challenges they will face in life.

Peoples Bank has been a proud supporter of Ladies in Action for nearly a decade, contributing not only financial support, but also the expertise of their employees like Deidra Singleton, who conduct financial workshops at the organization’s Leadership Academy. This partnership has played a pivotal role in providing scholarships for students and empowering them to compete for the best opportunities.

“We are truly grateful for the ongoing support of Peoples Bank. Their dedication to empowering youth aligns perfectly with our mission to develop young leaders in their pursuit of excellence,” says Lori Mathes.
