When you use the card to make purchases, it works just like a check, deducting the amount directly from your checking account. Or use it like an ATM card to withdraw cash at our ATMs. Also accepted on internet web sites and around the world at ATMs with the STAR logo.

Peoples Bank customers have received a new MasterCard® chip card with built-in chip technology which provides an added layer of protection for the next generation of card payments.

Advanced technology makes it difficult for fraudsters to duplicate your information when you use a card with an embedded microchip. Security is enhanced by dynamic data created making each chip transaction unique and virtually impossible to replicate.

What if I have not received my new card?

If you have not received your new chip card, please contact customer service by emailing or calling 1-877-802-1212 from 8am-6pm, Monday through Friday.

How do I activate my new card?

  1. Call 1-866-985-2273 to activate your new chip card and select a PIN number
  2. Sign the back of your new card
  3. Cut up and discard your old Visa® debit card
  4. Provide your new card number to any companies that automatically bill your debit card
  5. Use your new PIN wherever PIN transactions are accepted

Why use chips?

Chip cards protect against “skimming”, a technique where fraudsters copy the data from a traditional card’s magnetic stripe and use it to create a duplicate or counterfeit card. A chip-enabled terminal does not scan the magnetic stripe, providing stronger protection for the cardholder.

Where can I use my new card?

As retailers transition to chip technology, the numbers of chip-enabled terminals will grow over time. To ensure you can use your card at any retailer, your new card will have both the chip and magnetic stripe. If the terminal is chip-enabled, you will insert your card in the slot located at the top or bottom of the terminal and follow the prompts. Otherwise you will swipe the card as you do today.

What about ATMs?

Your new chip card will work at ATMs just as your current card does now.

How do I use the new card?

The new cards are easy to use. At merchants with chip readers, simply insert the card into the reader and leave it there for the entire transaction. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction.
